Pure Effect by Derren brown
They say: This book is for the serious thinker who would normally disregard 99% of a book's content. I say: This, the first book by Darren, has caused a bit of a stir in the community and, after reading it, it is easy to see why. The book is split into three sections: Part One - Practical, covers some groundwork in his personal philosophy of magic and how it should work from an audience perspective. There is also a good amount of space devoted to moving out of your "comfort zone" of performing; quite a few of his effects are based on probabilities rather than certainties, with no "outs" to speak of; if the effect fails, you have to take it on the chin and move on. The point he is trying to make is that when these effects do come off, it's an absolute jaw dropper.

NAME: ENCYCLOPEDIA OF IMPROMPTU MAGIC
PRICE: £25 (DAVENPORTS) TYPE: BOOK DIFFICULTY: HELPS IF YOU CAN READ ANGLES: LYING, SITTING, STANDING! EXAMINABLE: TOTALLY RESET: JUST START AGAIN! COMMENTS: When this first arrived, I thought I had been done! Reason being, it is a large A4 format, hardcover book, but only half of each page is written on!! That is in one column, so the nearly 600 pages, become 300. Having said that, the introduction written by the writer of the book Martin Gardner, admits the contents to be slovenly, imperfect and incomplete as in the origin to most of the tricks. Personally, I have learnt a lot of truly impromptu tricks from within its covers. There are tricks utilising almost any object you can think of. Here are but a very few: BELT,CABBAGE,DOUGHNUT,EARS,FEATHER,GRAPE,HORN,ICE,KEY,LIPSTICK,MAPLE SEED,NOSE,OLIVES,PIE,RADISH,SCARF,TOES,VACUUM CLEANER,WATERMELON,ZIPPER. That is a mere drop in the ocean to the amount of tricks and objects to be found. I suppose if you can't find tricks you like in this book, your not looking properly.

Desert Brainstorm Volume 3
Genre :Mentalism & mental magic Available from : various Price : £23.99 approx Duration : 90 mins
List of effects :-
Extra sensory deception
Larry beckers interpretation of some psychological forces rolled into one routine.
Auto brainstorm
An effect using 2 spectators, 1 spec takes a deck behind his back and turns a card over, replacing it back in the box and now having it in full view, but sealed. Second spec is asked to use their imagination as a scene is set ending them drawing a thought of card, the cards are now taken from the box and the overturned card matches!
Somewhere in time
A 2 watch routine that certainly owes a nod and a wink to banachek, a watch is placed in specs hand, a 2nd watch is borrowed and randomly set by the audience to a time, the watch in the specs hand has now been found to have moved to that random time too!
The Devils dice
A dice throwing routine where a spec throws two dice three times, the results of the throws are recorded by the spectator while the performer has his back turned and also tries to record what he thinks the results may be, the totals are added by the spec and the audience. they are found to match!
Quadravoque
A spec shuffles a deck of cards then asked to deal them onto performers hand stopping whenever they feel ready, the spec stops and the performer makes a statement waging the contents of his wallet on that card matching a prediction. The wallet is removed and written on the face of a $ bill is the stopped on card !
Sock it away
A spec is asked to imagine a shoe size..... they name it whilst a pair of socks is lying untouched on a table, the socks are picked up and inside is a size label which has the spec initial on and the thought of size! Weird effect from a weird guy..nuff said.
Open & shut
A prediction is set aside on a piece of card, untouched throughout. A deck of cards is produced and a spectator is asked to name a number 1-52, the number is then dealt to. The card on that number matches the card stated on the prediction that lies on the table!
There are a couple of effects on this volume that I simply don’t like. However after seeing the method it does open your eyes and get that old grey matter ticking over into devising routines of your own. As I have said a few times before, mentalism is probably 80% presentation, so bear that in mind when you watch it.
Would I buy again? now that I have reviewed the whole series I shall say..........yes.
Definitely, 3 volumes, 21 routines, methods that will just make you want to sit and create your own effects. yes, this is a brilliant set of videos.
